“Congratulations to the Cocoa Beach Math Team for their 1st Place finish in Geometry at the Brevard County Math Tournament held last Saturday at ESF in Viera.

The Geometry Team, comprised of Nate Li, Oliver McTammany, and Brandon Toe, competed with only 3 of their 4 team members, and STILL managed to capture 1st Place in the County on the Written Test portion of the Competition.

Congratulations again to Coach Prince and the Geometry Team for their incredible 1st Place finish, and you can view their 1st Place Trophy in the front office next to Mrs. Westbrook.”

CBJSHS Student Named Semifinalist in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – Clement Li, a graduating senior Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School, has been named one of approximately 550 semifinalists in the 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from more than 3,300 candidates on the basis of superior achievements, leadership qualities, personal character, and involvement in community and school activities.

Li is a senior in the IB program at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School. In addition to being a part of FIRST Robotics Team 233, The Pink Team, he enjoys playing violin, solving Rubik's cubes, and teaching math or science. He also participates in academic team competitions and is involved with his church. Last summer, he worked on organic solar cell research at the University of Central Florida. Although he is still deciding which college to attend, Li would like to study chemistry, chemical engineering, or aerospace engineering.

The 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program semifinalists were chosen by a panel of distinguished educators after a review of students' essays, self assessments, descriptions of activities, school recommendations, and school transcripts.

Final selection of the Scholars will be made by the Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of eminent citizens appointed by the President, and will be announced in May. The Commission will select one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. students living abroad; up to 20 students representing the visual, literary and performing arts; and 15 students at-large.

Scholars will be invited to Washington, D.C., in June to receive the U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion at a recognition ceremony and to participate in various activities and events held in their honor.

Robotics

The pink team started on Thursday without a working robot, no driver practice or software testing (it’s a long story)  by Friday we were moving a bit, scoring occasionally but still figuring things out.  Friday night at dinner, we thought we figured out the problems (funny how a good meal will do that) well, lo and behold, by the time the qualification matches were over on Saturday at 11:30am, the pink team was seed #2 out of 64 teams from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Germany, the Dominican Republic and Australia!!   We went on to fight our way out of the quarterfinals and semifinals.  It was down to the final 2.  The students and parents in the stands were screaming wildly (if they still had a voice left).  By the time it was over, we were successful, the robotics version of march madness was finished and the pink team was #1!  We couldn’t have been happier (especially the way things started) but our fortunes were not yet done.  The final award of the day is called the Chairman’s award.  There are a few essays, a 5 minute presentation, a video and some picture components.  It’s the award to strive for… why your team should be a role model to others.  Well, you guessed it, we won that too!  I’ve never seen so many kids crying before at a robotics competition.  Oh wait, that was me too!  We will be competing in Boston in a couple of weeks and then on to St. Louis where we have qualified twice so far, for the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

Thanks for all your support

Top School in the Country

U.S. News & World Report has ranked West Shore Jr./Sr. HS in Melbourne, Edgewood Jr./Sr. HS in Merritt Island, and Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS in Cocoa Beach as three of the best 208 high schools in the country for math and science.  The first-ever Best High Schools for Math and Science ranking methodology was developed by U.S. News and is based on the key principle that students at the Best High Schools for Math and Science must take and pass a robust curriculum of college-level Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) courses.

Sports Volunteer Opportunity

If you are interested in being a part of basketball, soccer or wrestling this season, we are looking for PA Announcers, managers, people to keep stats and video tape.  You will get into the games for free and can earn lots of volunteer hours for IB or Bright Futures.  See Coach Blackmon

NCAA Academic Requirements

Plenty of new NCAA academic reform was approved in October, 2011.  Will affect our freshman class(class of 2015) and beyond!!

 http://www.facebook.com/pages/FreeRecruitingWebinarorg/151561204882287

Here are the highlights for high school student-athletes.
Academic core course requirements have INCREASED. Class of 2015 and beyond, D1 students must have a minimum 2.3 core gpa (increased from 2.0) along with the appropriate SAT/ACT score. The NEW sliding scale for the SAT/ACT will also soon be approved with higher test scores required. 10 of the 16 core requirement must be completed by the end of the junior year of high school.
If a student-athlete graduates with a 2.0-2.29 CORE gpa with the appropriate sliding scale, they can still receive a scholarship, participate in practice, but CAN NOT participate in game action their freshman year.
