JROTC - Color Guard - Drill Team - Honor Guard - Rifle Team |
LTC Cox |
|
Parents and students!!!!
Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding elective???
One that will improve your leadership skills, confidence, and
self-esteem while also preparing you for college or that job
after school. If so, then you should seriously consider
the JROTC program.
This class has
helped me to build my confidence and character. More
importantly, it gave me a friendly push when I needed it and a
pat on the back when I deserved it! In fact, most of what I have
learned here can not be found in a text book. I have obtained
real skills that will help me for jobs in the future or in
getting in to that special college. Plus, JROTC looks good on my
resume and college application. That’s always a plus!
In this class
I’m certain there is something for everyone! We have many teams
to select from as well. The highly motivated cadet might
choose to participate in the Color Guard, Honor Guard, or Drill
team. If you have a keen eye or if you are just a good shooter
then there is the Rifle Team. Highly conditioned athletes
might opt to join the Raider Team which will challenge the upper
limits of physical conditioning. The JROTC class work is
challenging, diverse, and a lot of fun as well. For example,
cadets
find finds map reading, CPR, and first aid training
enjoyable and it is part of the reason they join. No two
days are ever alike and our week generally follows this
schedule:
Monday: Drill and Ceremonies (marching)
Tuesday: Academics
Wednesday: Uniform Day
Thursday: Academics
Friday: PT (physical training)
There are also MANY activities that take
place throughout the year such as:
*Battalion Picnic*
Iron woman/man competition
*Military Ball*
Organization Day
*Dance Exercise/Hip Hop with Mrs. Cruz*
Summer Camp
So if you want
to join me in a class that challenges you both mentally and
physically, and a class that help builds you to become
successful in the future, than join me in JROTC! Our
mission is to help motivate young people to be better citizens
and there is NO emphasis on joining a military service after
high school. Come join the JROTC challenge!!!!

Journalism and New
Journalism Club |
MsVanDenBoogaard |
The
journalism classes produce student-written and designed
newspapers about school activities, sports, and other issues
pertaining to teen life. The high school paper, “The
Bayonet,” is published by Florida Today three or four times
a year. Our middle school students produce “The Minutemen
News” two or three times a year. Students not in the
journalism classes can contribute to the papers through the
Journalism club, which meets on Mondays after school.
Advertisements in “The Bayonet” reach nearly 1500 students
and faculty, primarily households in the Cocoa Beach - Cape
Canaveral – Patrick AFB community. Advertising rates for
“The Bayonet” vary from $35 for a business card-size ad for
one issue, to $425 for a full-page ad in four issues. Local
businesses wishing to advertise in “The Bayonet” are invited
to contact newspaper adviser Diana van den Boogaard at
783-1776 ext 5523, or

TV Production |
Ms VanDenBoogaard |
The TV
classes produce a daily Minutemen News announcement show
that features sports victories, practices, classroom and
club activities, science research winners, IB events, pep
rallies, elections, whatever goes on at the Beach. Students
complete several activities throughout the year, from
videotaping the football games to producing the senior video
yearbook video. Videos for 2005, 2007 and 2009 are
available for sale. Contact Ms. van den Boogaard at
783-1776 ext 5523, or
vandenboogaard@brevardschools.org.
Two years ago seventh grade Language Arts teacher Jane
Elliott asked family and friends of her late father to
contribute to our Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School TV
Department in his memory. Over $1,000 has been received.
Mr. Elliott passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2007.
He is survived by his wife Sarah, who many will recall as
the media specialist at Cocoa Beach for 17 years, before she
retired in 1987.
John
Elliott had a passion for the television medium and was a
pioneer in TV and aerospace. He built one of the first
color television sets, complete with a round screen. Mr.
Elliott was extremely interested in how television
production is taught in public schools, and he wanted to see
that schools have current equipment. Donations may be sent
to the TV Production department at the school, 1500
Minutemen Causeway, Cocoa Beach, FL 32931.

National Honor Society |
Ms. Von Appen |
|
The Cocoa Beach High
School National Honor Society seeks to create
enthusiasm for SCHOLARSHIP, stimulate a desire to
render SERVICE, promote worthy LEADERSHIP, and
encourage the development of CHARACTER in students.
The blue pendants are worn by NHS members and
represent their commitment to the four cardinal
principles they have pledged to uphold and their
successful completion of all the requirements placed
upon them by membership. Honor Society members
combine service learning and fun by adopting a
shoreline for a monthly beach cleanup, co-sponsoring
the Homecoming Tailgate Party and many other worthy
projects throughout the school year.
Selection to membership
is based on the four criteria of scholarship,
leadership, service and character. Students must be
nominated by a faculty member and must have an
un-weighted cumulative average of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale
to be considered. Faculty members rate students who
qualify scholastically with a checklist that covers
leadership, service and character. The NHS faculty
council (a group of teachers appointed by the
principal) uses these checklists to select qualified
students. It is important to note that students may
not apply for membership in the National Honor
Society. Membership is an honor bestowed upon a
select group of student by the faculty council on
behalf of the school faculty.
All members are
required to maintain a scholastic average of 3.5 or
above each semester. They must complete ten hours of
community service (of their choice), and participate
in chapter service and fundraising projects.
Membership in National Honor Society is an honor and
once dismissed, a student cannot regain membership.
The
National Honor Society is an organization which was
established in 1921 to recognize and foster academic
achievement while developing the characteristics of
character, service and leadership which are
essential to citizens in a democracy. The Promethean
Chapter at Cocoa Beach High was established in 1964.

Students Against Destructive
Decisions (SADD) is a nationally affiliated club for high school
students. SADD’s mission is to provide students with the best
prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the
issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving
and other destructive decisions. At Cocoa Beach, SADD is an
inclusive, not an exclusive, organization. We meet monthly, on
the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the media center
at 3:30. Each month, members work on theme (Red Ribbon Week,
Anti-Smoking programs, Responsible Driving, Prom Promise, etc.)
related activities and projects to “get the message out” to the
entire school. SADD students are involved in not just the
school’s activities but participate in District, state and
national programs. Five students attended the national
conference in Boston last summer and we plan to attend again
this year. Mrs. Dean serves as the sponsor and can be contacted
at
deanl@brevard.k12.fl.us. The Cocoa Beach SADD motto is:
